Please consider including my script 'pye' a.k.a. 'pick your emerge' in app-portage or maybe gentoolkit. Pye is a Python script, that parses the output of emerge -p[uU] world/system/whatever, and presents a nice numbered list to the user. The user then can specify simply with numbers/ranges of numbers which packages he wants to emerge.

I include an ebuild for the script.
Thank you for considering this.

Sorry this reply took ages!

Is there any possibility your tool could be extended with a menu
(curses/slang), where the user can tag off the packages he wants to install,
in addition to listing the desired packages by number?

Reassigning to maintainer wanted since tools has enough packages to manage at
present.

404 upstream is not much useful -> CANTFIX.
