Description raptor 2004-03-02 05:15:59 UTC
If HIGHMEM is selected when compiling the kernel..the machine crashes every 2-3 days.
I have a machine with 1 GB RAM.
I made tests with HIGHMEM enabled and one of the following :
- w/ & w/o HIGHMEM IO
- w/ & w/o APIC
- w/ & w/o APIC IO
- w/ & w/o GSecurity
with all these scenarios the machine crashes...

#uname -a
Linux xxx 2.4.22-gentoo-r5 #10 Mon Feb 23 14:13:30 EET 2004 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

After I disabled HIGHMEM the system already made 6 days uptime..

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable HIGHMEM
2.
3.

Actual Results:
crash

Expected Results:
not crash :")

Filed bug in wrong place, also where did you experience this bug along with what kernel? Might want to add "emerge --info" as well since the bug doesn't say anything more than "my system doesn't work" sorry=P

I posted the kernel (did u see uname output i.e.2.4.22-gentoo-r5), and I doesnt say simply "doesnt work"..
I have explained that i tried different variants compiling the kernel.. and
that only disabling HIGHMEM solved the problem.. already 9 days uptime
Here is the output of emerge info :
Portage 2.0.49-r21 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.2-r9, 2.4.22-gentoo-r5)

Okay, would you be able to confirm this issue on vanilla-sources-2.4.20 using a "crashing" configuration as you did for gentoo-sources?

Thanks!

How about a newer kernel? Does it still crash?

Bug is being closed due to lack of user input.
