Chapter 6 says, "Knoppix users (and people that install Gentoo from an installation medium that does not use DevFS) should now bind-mount the /dev structure. If you use one of our LiveCDs you can skip this step." This is a bad instruction for people who are installing from an existing Linux installation (that doesn't use DevFS). When the bootstrap script emerges baselayout, it creates/overwrites a bunch of device files in /dev. This is bad if the user is installing from an existing distribution, because their device files should not be overwritten. I do not understand the purpose of this step. The stage1 tarball contains perfectly good device files.
This is the disadvantage of not referencing bug numbers when changing files in CVS :) I cannot find any e-mail telling me why I added that instruction to the document even though I can remember why I did it ~ something to do with "/dev/null: no such file or directory" during bootstrapping. Anyway, I've removed the instruction from the handbook and see what happens. Too many users complaining in forums, mail and now even harassing me on irc.
