After updating to Virtualbox-4.1.20, I get the following error on every VM after a while: VM runtime error: fatal=false, errorID=BLKCACHE_IOERR message="The I/O cache encountered an error while updating data in medium "ahci-0-0" (rc=VERR_DEV_IO_ERROR). Make sure there is enough free space on the disk and that the disk is working properly. Operation can be resumed afterwards" After that, the physical disk that holds all the virtualbox disks fails miserably, and I am getting the following errors: Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530572] res 40/00:1c:6a:99:65/00:00:1d:00:00/40 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530580] ata2.00: status: { DRDY } Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530586] ata2.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530600] ata2.00: cmd 61/10:d8:12:db:42/00:00:1d:00:00/40 tag 27 ncq 8192 out Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530605] res 40/00:1c:6a:99:65/00:00:1d:00:00/40 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530612] ata2.00: status: { DRDY } Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530629] ata2.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530641] ata2.00: cmd 61/10:e0:4a:e6:42/00:00:1d:00:00/40 tag 28 ncq 8192 out Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530649] res 40/00:1c:6a:99:65/00:00:1d:00:00/40 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530657] ata2.00: status: { DRDY } Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530663] ata2.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530681] ata2.00: cmd 61/10:e8:02:0c:43/00:00:1d:00:00/40 tag 29 ncq 8192 out Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530685] res 40/00:1c:6a:99:65/00:00:1d:00:00/40 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530692] ata2.00: status: { DRDY } Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530698] ata2.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530710] ata2.00: cmd 61/10:f0:aa:3e:43/00:00:1d:00:00/40 tag 30 ncq 8192 out Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530714] res 40/00:1c:6a:99:65/00:00:1d:00:00/40 Emask 0x50 (ATA bus error) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530722] ata2.00: status: { DRDY } Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.530730] ata2: hard resetting link Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.989442] ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310) Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1038.991601] ata2.00: configured for UDMA/33 Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002289] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002297] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Aborted Command [current] [descriptor] Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002304] Descriptor sense data with sense descriptors (in hex): Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002308] 72 0b 00 00 00 00 00 0c 00 0a 80 00 00 00 00 00 Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002322] 1d 65 99 6a Aug 26 16:44:35 helix kernel: [ 1039.002328] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Moreover, downgrading back to 4.1.18 (host, vms are running either 4.1.20 or 4.1.18 guest additions) seems to solve the problem Seems like this was a problem with the PSU but it's very weird that it was only triggered when using the new virtualbox. Closing as INVALID
