At http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk6-downloads-1637591.html jdk-6u34-linux-x64-demos.tar.gz is shown as an 0 MB file. After downloading and copying to /usr/portage/distfiles 'emerge -uvDN world' continues to complain:

It seems now, that the zero-byte jdk-6u34-linux-x64-demos.tar.gz is no more a problem for emerge -pvD sun-jdk.

The ebuild doesn't actually need and install the amd64 demos, instead throws a warning. What I forgot was to remove the examples part from the fetch instructions. This is fixed in 1.6.0.35 to be stabilized due to security.
