Chromium 22.0.1229.12 vs 21.0.1180.81 font rendering

When bumping up Chromium version from 21.0.1180.81 to 22.0.1229.12 I noticed that fonts looks much worse than they did before. This is especially true with fonts that don't have much hinting, and less so with well hinted fonts. I found the following upstream issue around this:

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=141425&can=5&colspec=ID%20Pri%20Mstone%20ReleaseBlock%20OS%20Area%20Feature%20Status%20Owner%20Summary

I'm attaching a screenshot of the issue with 21.0.1180.81 on the left and 22.0.1229.12 on the right to demonstrate the problem. Notice in specific how bold fonts look overly bold and regular fonts look thinner and weaker with 22.0.1229.12.

Seems like an upstream issue (nothing we can fix here).

Are you sure? I don't think it's clear at this point if this upstream or Gentoo, so it's premature to close this bug right now. The problem could be lots of things (missing bundled libs, whatever.)

The screenshot Mark posted matches the others posted to the upstream bug. Also, I just tested the google-chrome package and it exhibits the same behavior. It isn't worth investigating at a distro level in my opinion.

I'll reopen this just to keep track of it and prevent duplicates.

Issues are fixed at 22.0.1229.36.

Excellent, closing then.
