-j4 build.log

Making: sc_tool.lib

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh dear - something failed during the build - sorry !
For more help with debugging build errors, please see the section in:
            http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development

  internal build errors:

ERROR: error 65280 occurred while making /var/tmp/portage/app-office/libreoffice-3.6.0.4/work/libreoffice-core-3.6.0.4/binfilter/bf_goodies/util

it seems that the error is inside 'binfilter', please re-run build
inside this module to isolate the error and/or test your fix:

build_error.log should contain the captured output of the failed module(s)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To rebuild a specific module:

make binfilter.clean # optional
make binfilter

when the problem is isolated and fixed, re-run 'make'

So what does running "make binfilter" does when you try it in the $S?

===========================================================================

I have exactly David's problem where the build stops at libsvtlo.so every time (nothing random about it).

While trying to debug this problem I noticed that there are periods of several minutes where 'make' is using 100% of one CPU, while the other three CPUs sit idle. These periods are abnormally long, and strace shows that 'make' is doing things far slower than normal.

During those periods I can run 'ps axf' multiple times and see various different child processes marked 'defunct' in the process tree. [see below]. This is completely reproducible, but I don't know how to debug it.

The defunct child processes are always 'cp' 'mkdir' or 'touch'. When the slow periods end and actual compiling resumes, all four CPUs are being used (as expected) by cc1plus and running at normal speed.

I think those 'defunct' processes should be creating files like libsvtlo.so, but they are actually leaving 0-byte files (maybe created by 'touch'?)

Anyway, only a few of us are affected by this problem so David and I must be doing something unusual.

(BTW, I'm seeing this on both amd64 and ~amd64, so it's not a compiler problem.)

Comment 4 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-08-17 11:28:30 UTC
Well I don't expect much people using +binfilter so maybe you are just the few that actually build with it enabled :-)

Anyway I will try to look into it during weekend (it takes lots of cpu cycles to build binfilter :/)
Comment 5 walt 2012-08-18 00:04:42 UTC
Unsetting the binfilter useflag allowed libreoffice to install successfully, so thank you for that hint. I forgot that I set that useflag, and I really don't need it any longer.

However, the very slow build and the defunct processes are still bothersome, so I'd like to know if anyone else is seeing the same thing. It reminds me of a very similar problem in the gcc package a year or two ago, where 'make' was using 100% of the CPU for some reason and the total build took about twice as long as normal. I forget how the bug got fixed, but it did eventually.
Comment 6 Tomáš Chvátal (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-08-18 07:24:41 UTC
That is pretty easy, not much developers work on the binfilter and it is pretty messy. So it is quite prone to break, anyway I am going to try to build with +binfilter now myself, to see if I could make it compile or not.

Reproduced, good.
Comment 8 Joshua Clayton 2012-08-19 14:27:33 UTC
There are several copies of libsvtlo.so strewn around the build env, and they are all zero bytes.

Looking at the build log, it would appear that libsvtlo.so gets touched at some point in the build process (maybe more than once), and then gets copied around without ever having been compiled.

in fact the entire directory tmp/portage/app-office/libreoffice-3.6.0.4/work/libreoffice-core-3.6.0.4/workdir/unxlngx6.pro/ExternalHeaders/Library is full of zero byte so files.

The solution might be to touch these files only if they exist. Then the normal make mechanics can force it to be rebuilt before it gets copied. I'm not sure I have time to figure the rest of the problem out but I will report if I find anything. I might need help making a patch with the right prefix.

my use flags:

diplodocus libreoffice-core-3.6.0.4 # emerge -pv libreoffice

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

On the same machine not using "binfilter" and those 2 extensions it built fine. I am often doing strange things but not in this case :-).

Thank you Tomáš, I still can't get how are you finding solutions for things like this.

Oh dear - something failed during the build - sorry !
For more help with debugging build errors, please see the section in:
            http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development

  internal build errors:

ERROR: error 65280 occurred while making /var/tmp/portage/app-office/libreoffice-3.6.0.4/work/libreoffice-core-3.6.0.4/binfilter/bf_goodies/util

it seems that the error is inside 'binfilter', please re-run build
inside this module to isolate the error and/or test your fix:

build_error.log should contain the captured output of the failed module(s)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To rebuild a specific module:

make binfilter.clean # optional
make binfilter

when the problem is isolated and fixed, re-run 'make'

I did an emerge --sync and compiled world again. Now libreoffice-3.6.0.4 compiled without errors. The section "(42/44) Building module testtools" compiled fine.

What caused/solved the compilation failure?

This issue is dupe of 430612 ; the mergedlib messed up solver at least I think. But i will have to run few more build tests.

Okey under some scenarios the binfilter crash is still there. So it needs more work.

Problem is that binfilter can't be made aware of mergelib.

So we fixed it in configure.in and await merge to 3.6.2 release. In meantime there is --disable-mergelib in place anyway for the other include bug.
