Description Stejarel Veres 2012-08-05 18:31:22 UTC
Hi,

Upon upgrading to silo-1.4.14_p20120226 earlier this week, I am no longer able to successfully run silo - what I get is:

'Fatal error: Second stage /boot/second.b has wrong size'

I was able to work around this by downgrading to silo-1.4.14_p20100228 (along with downgrading e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs to 1.41.14, since the older SILO does not compile with e2fsprogs* 1.42).

I would be curious, though, why the most recent SILO fails.

Stejarel

Try with latest silo, if you still have the issue please report it to the sparc kernel mailing list

patch for sys-boot/silo-1.4.14_p20170829

It's still broken in current silo. This was a good one; the issue turns out to involve awk and multibyte characters.

While building second.b, awk thinks it's dealing with non-ASCII characters rather than raw bytes. It winds up embedding a bad raw-binary length header into second.b unless '-b' is added to the awk command:

# /bin/ls -l second.b
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 54784 Mar 13 12:39 second.b
# /bin/ls -l second.b | awk '{printf "%c%c%c%c",0,$5/65536,($5%65536)/256,0}' | xxd
00000000: 0000 c396 00 .....
# /bin/ls -l second.b | awk -b '{printf "%c%c%c%c",0,$5/65536,($5%65536)/256,0}' | xxd 00000000: 0000 d600 ....

I think the only part of silo that even cares about that header is make_room_for_raid1() in silo/silo.c. So, it's likely that the bug didn't manifest for the handful of others that might have tried to figure this out :(

The attached patch makes silo work for me. Setup: Sun T5220, /boot on ext2 RAID1, v0.90 MD superblock, boot partition starting at cylinder 2.
