Comment 1 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2012-08-05 03:34:03 UTC
Works fine for me.
Comment 2 Chris Smith 2012-08-05 22:15:24 UTC
Also many youtube videos present a pure black window - not just the video frame but the whole chromium frame - nothing can therefore be done.
Comment 3 Chris Smith 2012-08-05 22:36:44 UTC
Looks like Chromium thinks my computer no longer supports MapsGL (google maps) or HTML5 (youtube html5 trial). Although they work fine in Firefox.
Comment 4 Chris Smith 2012-08-06 00:27:44 UTC
Downgraded to www-client/chromium-22.0.1215.0 and MapsGL works fine on Google Maps as does the Html5 trial on Youtube.

Remerge www-client/chromium-22.0.1221.1 and both are broken again.
Comment 5 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2012-08-06 03:27:40 UTC
What kind of video card does this machine have? What video driver are you using, including the version? What version of Xorg and mesa?

Does anyone else experience this issue? If so, please provide the above information.

Nvidia - running x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-304.22

Xorg-server - running x11-base/xorg-server-1.12.3 as x11-base/xorg-server-1.12.99.903::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with <x11-base/xorg-server-1.12.99 required by (x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-304.22::gentoo, installed

Mesa - running media-libs/mesa-8.1_rc1_pre20120724
Comment 7 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2012-08-06 04:14:50 UTC
Can you try using a version of nvidia-drivers that is not hard masked?

No difference. Again these issues don't exist with chromium-22.0.1215.0 or Firefox.
Comment 9 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2012-08-06 14:42:21 UTC
This upstream bug might be related. Can you try disabling GPU compositing to see if that does anything?

Not really my symptoms. Only the "web page" goes black, not the tabs, title bar, etc. and it's instant.

No difference. I had previously tried that. Even removed the .config/chromium directory in case there was some left over cruft from previous versions.
Comment 11 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2012-08-06 14:57:52 UTC
Ah well. If someone else chimes in, maybe we can find a pattern.

> Ah well. If someone else chimes in, maybe we can find a pattern.

Most likely something to do with Chromium's (Open/Web)GL implementation in this version as MapsGL will no longer enable and if it was already enabled (because it worked with the previous version) then maps.google.com is black. Also many videos on YouTube will render a black page when I enroll in the HTML5 trial (youtube.com/html5).
There was also another site that rendered black but I don't remember what it was. Thought it was a site specific error at the time.
Comment 13 Chris Smith 2012-08-06 15:18:52 UTC
Yes, it's any WebGL stuff. If I go here (or any page with WebGL examples) and try to open any of the examples I get a black page:
http://code.google.com/p/webglsamples/
Comment 14 Chris Smith 2012-08-06 15:20:28 UTC
Possibly a regression of:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=138088
Which is claimed to be fixed.
Comment 15 Julien Sanchez archtester 2012-08-08 09:20:44 UTC
I can't reproduce this bug (webgl google maps is renders fine) with the same configuration:
- nvidia-drivers 302.17-r1
- xorg-server 1.12.3
- mesa 8.1_rc1_pre20120724
- chromium 22.0.1221.1

Hmmm...
www-client/chromium-22.0.1215.0 works
www-client/chromium-22.0.1221.1 does not work
and now
www-client/chromium-22.0.1229.0 does not work

BUT

if I downgrade the kernel from
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.5.0
to
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.7
then
www-client/chromium-22.0.1229.0 works

it's looking like
>www-client/chromium-22.0.1215.0
cannot do WebGL with
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.5.0
Comment 17 Julien Sanchez archtester 2012-08-08 15:04:47 UTC
Good catch. I'm using gentoo-sources-3.2.12 that's likely why it works on my system.
Comment 18 Chris Smith 2012-08-08 15:15:37 UTC
Maybe this bug is related: #430216

See comment 7 here:

Does appear to be some sort of interaction with kernel-3.5.0.

Does the requirement of kernel version is kind of build-time or run-time?
I build chromium with kernel 3.5.0-gentoo.

and it has problem with webgl,it show red page when access webgl samples page, but works with firefox.both tested with kernel 3.3.4-gentoo and 3.5.0-gentoo.

chromium version: www-client/chromium-22.0.1229.0
Comment 21 Chris Smith 2012-08-10 16:01:22 UTC
starting chromium with --disable-gpu-sandbox is a workaround
Comment 22 Chris Smith 2012-08-13 19:51:55 UTC
WebGL pages rendered black problem still exits with www-client/chromium-22.0.1229.2-r1 and gentoo-sources-3.5.1 with nvidia-drivers unless previously stated workaround is used.

Reported as fixed upstream (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=140214#c89).

You could install chromium-9999 or download the lastest build (http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-continuous/index.html) to give a try.
Comment 24 Chris Smith 2012-08-24 12:25:29 UTC
Fixed upstream starting with chromium-22.0.1229.12.
