It seems HPOJ still has problems after patching for me. I've posted on the HPOJ Devel list so I'm waiting to hear from them. Definite usb communication problems with my printer and I'm not the only one. Still would probably be a good idea to add the patch though.

Sorry that took so long-still getting same communication problems with printer. ptal-init setup finds printer and starts services successfully. None of the other ptal commands work, all fail with communication problems. When cups starts I get this:
Mar 13 10:47:12 [ptal-mlcd] ERROR at transport/ExMlcCommandChannel.cpp:251, dev=
<mlc:usb:photosmart_7900_series@/dev/lp0>, pid=6994, e=2, t=1079192832_ C
ommand reply timeout on port=0, count=1, lastRequest=0x00!_
Mar 13 10:47:12 [ptal-mlcd] ERROR at ExMgr.cpp:871, dev=<mlc:usb:photosmart_7900
_series@/dev/lp0>, pid=6994, e=2, t=1079192832_ exClose(reason=0x3002)_

Of course can't setup printer in cups: ptal device not found where it should be ptal:mlc:usb:etc...

Any ideas?

OK, not sure what to make of this but I've got it working now. After reading some other posts on similar subjects I decided to try making a symlink dev /dev/ptal-mlcd linked to /var/run/ptal-mlcd (there is a ptal-printd symlinked /dev to /var/run/ptal-printd created when running the ptal-init script as I'm sure you know). Did a ptal-init start and it came up fine (this worked before so nothing different there). Then I started cupsd and it came up with no errors (I was rather amazed at this point). Setup the printer in cups and printing worked just fine. Thought I had it figured out, I'm running a pure udev system so I thought /dev/ptal-mlcd was just not being made. So I rebooted to see if I could reproduce this, did the same steps as above and cupsd failed to start with the same error messages I posted above. So much for that.... I ran ptal-init setup again, deleted the printer and reprobed. It found it ok and everything came up nicely, including cupsd without making the /dev/ptal-mlcd symlink. Now I'm really confused. rc-update add hpoj default; rc-update add cupsd default and rebooted to see what would happen. hpoj started ok, cupsd spit out the first of the 2 error messages I posted above and then started ok. Printing worked fine. I then set cupsd init script to be the last one started thinking that the error message could be a hotplug/udev timing issue. Everything comes up fine now, no errors at all, regardless if the printer is on or off when booting. So it's working for now-I say that because about a month ago I had it working for a couple of days then it just stopped, wouldn't do anything-most of the time ptal-init setup wouldn't even be able to communicate with the printer. Now that you think I'm totally insane any thoughts? I guess the one question I need to ask is should there be a /dev/ptal-mlcd symlinked to /var/run/ptal-mlcd? I don't have one now and it's working but...for how long I'm not sure. One other thing, all the ptal commands seem to work now except ptal-connect -service ECHO fails.
