The KDE 3.2 Info page lists this as a "grave bug and common pitfall", and has a patch for it. "Two problems with KMail were detected which can lead to mail loss"

Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have a message with missing UID
2. Try to delete it
3. Your whole mail folder is clobbered

Actual Results:  
Method to obtain a message with missing UID has not been determined.

Expected Results:  
Just delete the message

That's because it's in kdepim, and the patches have been in portage since the day they were announced.
