nettle-2.4 # ./configure --help | grep openssl
  --disable-openssl       Do not include openssl glue in the benchmark program

OpenSSL is used only for benchmarking (examples/nettle-benchmark), which is not installed.

I suggest removing USE=ssl and its corresponding dependency. The situation right now is quite confusing, since it suggests that GnuTLS can function as a wrapper for OpenSSL via Nettle.

Thanks for reporting, USE and dependency are now gone.
