Description Gerrit Slomma 2004-02-23 13:40:14 UTC
the entire system hangs when performing the "mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo"
after having performed
# mkswap /dev/hda2
# swapon /dev/hda2
when using the smp-kernel

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot the live-cd with the x86-basic-1.4-20030911.iso
2.configure the harddrives as mentioned in the gentoo-tutorial part 1 chapter 4
3.# mkswap /dev/hda2
4.# swapon /dev/hda2
5.# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo

Actual Results:
the cursor blinks a mere second, then the entire system hangs. it can't be
accessed neither by telnet nor by a sole ping. a switch to another console
doesn't work either. the NUM-LOCK, SCROLL-LOCK, CAPS-LOCK indicators are dead.
this persists until the power-cord is disconnected an reconnected or the power-
button is short-circuit for at least 5 seconds

Expected Results:
wehen using the normal kernel of the live cd after having done the steps to
reproduce after the fraction of a second the prompt reapears and the
installation-process could be continued as described in the gentoo-tutorial

Intel Pentium III 933 (dual)
256MB PC133 SD-RAM
1x18GB SCSI sda (ID0) for the gentoo
1x36GB SCIS sdb (ID4) not used, reserved for WinXP Pro
Comment 1 Gerrit Slomma 2004-02-23 15:24:27 UTC
sorry, the commands actually are/were:
# mkswap /dev/sda2
# swapon /dev/sda2
for both the description an the "steps to reprocedure"
originally correct posted, but when hit "submit bug report"-button he stated i had forgotten to enter a component and when hit the back-button the entire entries made were scrubbed.
so i rushed down the entries from scratch overlooking the "/dev/hda"-statements
whay can't i alter my previous posted bug-report?

this is actually encountered when you have initially formated the partitions with the uniprocessor-kernel (that's what i 've done)
