Created attachment 317570 [details] patch including description of simplified xorg.conf file. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml If one doesn't already have an xorg.conf file, the nvidia guide is confusing. As it happens, a very simple four-line xorg.conf file suffices in that case. This patch to the nvidia guide describes the procedure. Known flaw: My Xorg.0.log file complains about being unable to load the DRI2 module, and notes that this means it won't be able to properly configure libvdpau. I don't address this in my patch.

Shouldn't you use xorg.conf.d instead for this?
Perhaps, but I don't believe either AMD's or nvidia's management tools look there. I wasn't even aware it was an option. Regardless, this patch was intended to be a simple update, not an overhaul.
