install-powerpc-minimal-20120330.iso didn't boot as well. install-powerpc-minimal-20101212.iso boots as expected. With install-powerpc-minimal-20101212.iso I could install the System with Gentoo Linux PPC64 (64-bit-userland) Everything works fine, execpt that I couldn't get any 3.x.x-Kernel running. Currently I use Linux Kernel 2.6.39.4 from kernel.org. uname -a Linux electra 2.6.39.4 #4 SMP Sat Jun 30 11:06:20 CEST 2012 ppc64 PPC970MP, altivec supported PowerMac11,2 GNU/Linux Hardware Overview: (from mac osx) Model Name: Power Mac G5 Model Identifier: PowerMac11,2 Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (1.0) Processor Speed: 2 GHz Number Of CPUs: 2 (dual core) L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1 GHz Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1 NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE: Chipset Model: GeForce 6600LE Type: Display Bus: PCIe Slot: SLOT-1 PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 128 MB Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0142 Revision ID: 0x00a4 ROM Revision: 2149 According to http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html Name: PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) ModelCode: g5_late_05 Model Number: M9590 Group1: PowerMac Group2: G5 Generation: 5 Machine Model: PowerMac11,2 Model introduced: 2005 Production year: 2005 Production week: 41 (October) And therefore also see here: http://www.apple-history.com/g5_late_05 lspci: (linux) 0000:00:0b.0 PCI bridge: Apple Inc. Currently I use Linux Kernel 2.6.39.4 > from kernel.org. How did it fail to boot? If you can't install a 3.0 kernel on ppc, then maybe the boot issue is related to that. $ grep KEYWORDS $(portageq portdir)/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources/gentoo* | grep " ppc " /home/gentoo-scm/gentoo-x86/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources/gentoo-sources-3.2.1-r2.ebuild:KEYWORDS="alpha amd64 arm hppa ia64 ppc ppc64 s390 sh sparc x86"
cd with install-powerpc-minimal-20120624.iso boot: tab shows 3 bootable kernel images: G5 G5-ttyS0,57600 ppc32 boot: G5 Please wait, loading kernel... Then black on white: done found display /pcif0,f0000000/NVDA,Parent@0/NVDA,Display-G@1, opening... done copying OF device tree... Building dt strings... Building dt structure... @ppc: Any ideas?
ping?
Never ping never worked with 3.x - kernels I rechecked it today with image install-powerpc-minimal-20120909.iso For kernels >= 3.0 also see: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-945822.html The output is different. The Kernel gets loaded there. But no message from init, openrc, udev.
Please try the current ISO: https://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/ppc/current-iso/https://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/ppc/current-iso/ It works on my PowerMac G5.
