Symlinking gdm to xdm in /etc/init.d would probably help avoid some confusion, I
almost submitted a bug report on this earlier and included a proper gdm init
script, but it seems like I was just being ignorant to the fact that xdm would
determine what display manager to load. I'm not sure if this is necessary for kdm.

its the same for kdm, and its mentioned in the installation document.
