Version 0.8 of ethtool is out for a while. There's a very important change since 0.7 : the TSO can be enabled/disabled.

And without disabling TSO (ethtool -K eth0 tso off), a lot of e1000 NICs are unreliable with a 2.6 kernel.

No need to change the ebuild, just bump the version, it works like a charm.

Maybe you mean 1.8 version...
I would like to ask the developers to add the new version(1.8) which came out on July 19, 2003.
Here are the changes: (from NEWS file)
Version 1.8 - July 19, 2003
