The rage 128 driver is roken in the linux-2.6.3-gentoo-r1 sources. It compiles nicely but when I reboot the screen flickers a few times and then dies (black). It stays blank until gdm has started the X server. Then the screen shows gdm but the screen is split up into several vertical lines that display the same thing and overlap. I experienced similar problems two-three years ago when my BIOS wasn't updated. I am now running BIOS version A21 on a Dell Latitude C600. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Compile with rage128 support 2.boot the kernel 3. I include my .config file for reference.

does this still occur with newer kernel versions?
No, now it works perfectly. Cheers.
Fixed.
