Description Paulo da Silva 2012-06-20 17:58:39 UTC
Converting a .flv to .avi causes the reproduction on a samsung dvd recorder/player to display the ~2/3 lower screen on TV completely green! On the pc (mplayer) the reproduction is fine however.

Command used:
ffmpeg -i 'foo.flv' -s 720x405 -r 15 -b:v 2M -b:a 128k 'foo.avi'
I tried with several variations of this command. No success!

As for versions until (including) 0.6.90 everything works fine. The command I use here is:
ffmpeg -i 'foo.flv' -s 720x405 -r 15 -b 2M -ab 128k 'foo.avi'

1) Please post your `emerge --info' output in a comment.

2) Wouldn't it be a problem on the dvd recorder/player decoding whatever encoding
was used (what actually do you mean by that? AVI is just a container format,
not a video codec) rather than an encoding problem. Sure it's an
incompatibility, but where should lie the blame in this case?
Comment 2 Paulo da Silva 2012-06-22 04:59:41 UTC
1.
I know almost nothing about video formats.
Here is what I could learn from the manual:

Samsung DVD-SH895
...
It's possible to reproduce video files with extensions.avi, .divx, .AVI, .DIVX
DivX video format (Codec): DivX 3.11 DivX 4.x DivX 5.x (without QPEL and GMC)
DivX audio format (Codec): MP3, audio layer 2 MPEG1 , LPCM, AC3, DTS
Max resolution reproduction: 720 x 576 pixels.

2.
The problem only began to occur with recent versions of ffmpeg. I always come back to 0.6.90. The recent ones always produce the same problem: 1/3 upper image seems normal and the lower 2/3 completely green.

3.
About being a problem of the dvd player ... I don't know, but I always could play any file with .avi extension including those produced by older ffmpeg versions. Sometimes I also used ffmpeg to change frame rates and resolutions of some .avi files. The player does not support high resolution files and some frame rates causes the video to display slowly (image by image). But never got the symptoms I have now. Besides the symptom is constant for any conversion.

Follows the emerge --info

OK, so can you show us what is in the .avi file you created? Or show some debug output of the command you used?
Comment 4 Paulo da Silva 2012-06-23 04:41:22 UTC
OK, I created a full tiny example but the tar.bz2 takes 5.9MB (3 files: original, old version conversion and new version conversion).

So, I'm going to make a shorter one and attach only the original file and the commands to produce the conversions.

BTW, two corrections to the previous post:

1. Last "good" version I tested: 0.7.8 (not 0.6.90).

2. The 2/3 lower screen is only green if the video is the first one played after power on. Otherwise it is part of the last video correctly played.

have you tried to report this upstream ? I'm afraid I dont have your dvd player and can't really help in guessing what could be wrong: ffmpeg producing non compliant files or the dvdplayer being 'broken'
