SITUATION:
* Installed Gentoo 1.4 around early 2004
* KDE 3.1.4 didn't work
* Updated to 3.1.5 (don't know when it was released as "stable")
* Same Problems

PROBLEM:
Lots of kdeinit: kio_* processes driving Konqueror (Webrowser and File Manager) crazy and prevent KDE from starting new programs.

CONSEQUENCES:
* Can't start programs anymore!
* Browser: Get "kio_http" errors while surfing the web; pictures aren't displayed (I get the broken-image icon).
* File Manager: When I double-click on documents (pictures, textfiles) they aren't displayed.
* KMail: POP-Errors.
* Lots of kdeinit: kio_http and kdeinit: kio_file processes have to be killed by hand.

HUH?
Visit the URL and have a look at some screenshots

WHAT I HAVE ALREADY TRIED:

Here is what I have already tried.

1) Emerged KDE 3.1.5. Same problem here...

2) The problem in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15593 was solved by adding
KDEDIRS=/usr/kde/3.1 to /etc/env.d/49kdelibs-3.1

However, on my system /etc/env.d/49kdelibs-3.1 didn't existis, so
* I first tried to add the line to an other kde-file in /etc/env.d, but it didn't solve the problem, so
* I just created the /etc/env.d/49kdelibs-3.1 and added the requested line.

In both cases, I got the same (expected) result:

$ echo $KDEDIRS
/usr/kde/3.1

But the weird "freezes" (actually the system is not freezing nor crashing...it just behaves crazy) were still there.

3) I already recompiled kdelibs, kdebase and qt in several various orders (kdelibs/kdebase/qt, kdebase/kdelibs/qt, qt/kdelibs/kdebase, and so on...)

4) rm ~/.kde* -rf and everything in /tmp which was related to KDE.

HOW IS THE ERROR REPORTED?
The errors are reported in three ways:

1. The errors are reported directly in (for example) Konqueror while surfing the web.
2. You get a popup message like "Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: Error loading 'kio_http'.
3. When you try to start a program (clicking on an icon or try to start with ALT-F2), nothing happens.

"SOLUTION":
Have always a Konsole open (or switch to another terminal) and kill the Processes by hand with
$ kill -15 <id>

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
There are several ways to reproduce the problem:

I. Use KDE for a while and see what happens.

II. Surf to a website with a litte more Java or Java-Script (I get these errors always when I surf to my homebanking site and want to log in).

III. If you don't want to wait like said in I. then try this: Start many programs in a short time (i.e. triple click on Konqueror and don't wait until it's loaded, move over to KMail and double click it, try to open four or five Konsoles, etc...)
Actual Results:
CONSEQUENCES:
* Can't start programs anymore!
* Browser: Get "kio_http" errors while surfing the web; pictures aren't
displayed (I get the broken-image icon).
* File Manager: When I double-click on documents (pictures, textfiles) they
aren't displayed.
* KMail: POP-Errors.
* Lots of kdeinit: kio_http and kdeinit: kio_file processes have to be killed
by hand.

Expected Results:
* Run programs
* Kill (quit) kio_<slave> processes after a while?

Here's a dumb question:

After you emerged KDE, did you run "env-update"? I have KDE installed on over 20 boxes doing nothing more than the typical emerge scenario and have never once had any problem like this.

Note that i'm not trying to downplay this problem, just point out that there's got to be something obvious that we're missing here that's causing this problem.
Comment 3 mail 2004-02-20 06:10:31 UTC
Basically, I never ran "env-update", because I thought that portage will do that for me, if really necessary.

I have Gentoo for about a year now, reinstalled it about four of five times and I never had the urge to do this...so env-update is something I completely forgot in the past (but never got in trouble because of that).

BUT, of course: I env-updated regulary since I noticed and troubleshooted the problem. Just re-emerged qt, kdelibs and kdebase yesterday (once more *sigh*) and after every emerge I did a

$ env-update && source /etc/profile

Tell me if you need anything more to know - for now, I just have no idea what else could matter :(

Tonight, I will try to emerge the complete KDE-3.1.5 Stuff again. What would be the best order to do this?
1. QT
2. kdelibs
3. kdebase
4. <other-kde-packages>?

Would this be okay? I will do an env-update and source /etc/profile after each step so I can be sure that the paths and environment variables are allright.

PS: I also etc-updated my config files regulary so this shouldn't be a problem neither.

PPS: Do you think it's a Gentoo related or pure KDE problem?

Could you try to log in from a console and not run kde. Then delete /tmp/ksocket-username, /tmp/kde-username
Possibly even delete the X socket and mcop etc stuff.
Comment 5 Caleb Tennis (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-18 16:48:37 UTC
unable to replicate this. It seems like a complete local problem, and I don't know how we can help you fix it or troubleshoot it. Sorry :(
