When using KDE 3.2 I can hear no sound. When using 3.1.5 on the same machine there's no problem. Gnome with esound is doing fine, too. kmixer from 3.2 shows very starnge mixer settings. My soundcard is a Audidy (0000:00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)) and I'm using ALSA 0.9.8. With 1.0.2 there were a few issues (no sound). When I am switching from KDE3.2 (arts 1.2.0) to KDE3.1.5 or Gnome there is silence until I restart alsasound. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start KDE 3.2 2. no sound 3a. restart alsasound and use GNOME or KDE 3.1.5 -> no problem 3b. use GNOME or KDE 3.1.5 without restarting alsasound -> no sound Actual Results: hearing no sound Expected Results: hearing no sound Portage 2.0.50-r1 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.3_pre20040207-r0, 2.4.22-gentoo-r5) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.22-gentoo-r5 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.13 distcc 2.11.1 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache fixpackages" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.inode.at/ ftp://gentoo.inode.at/source/ http://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/linux/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aalib aavm acl alsa apache2 apm arts avi berkdb bonobo cdr crypt cups dga directfb doc dvd encode esd ethereal evms2 fbcon flash foomaticdb gb gd gdbm ggi gif gnome gphoto2 gpm gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile imap imlib innodb java jpeg kde kerberos krb4 ldap libg++ libwww mad mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg mpi mule mysql nas ncurses nls odbc oggvorbis opengl oss pam pda pdflib pdflibpng perl png pnp postgres python qt quicktime readline samba scanner sdl slang slp snmp socks5 spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex tiff truetype usb video_cards_radeon wmf wxwindows x86 xml xml2 xmms xosd xv zlib"
you probably need to ask in the forums - sound works fine for me here with kde 3.2. sounds like a misconfiguration somewhere.
The problem is maybe audidy specific. I have the same Version of KDE3.2 and Alsa running on a SB Live without any problems.
If you are using snd-intel8x0 (from alsa) kde's arts has known issues with it. (it's an ALSA bug)
I have this problem only with a soundblaster audigy. The problem is not there when using a sb live or other cards (except for the i810). I have the same settings with kde3.1.5 but 3.2 makes no sound.
Same problem here with a soundcard that uses snd-intel8x0 (82801BA/BAM AC'97). Everthing sound-related works, except arts 1.2.0. Is there anything i can do to fix it ? (without going to unstable)
i have i810 locally, and it works great with 3.2.2 and latest sound drivers. seems like a setup issue, but i recommend trying an upgrade to make sure you have the latest and great kde and underlying tools.
