I am trying to get a list of all available packages showing category/name:SLOT. man eix says the following: cmd | eix '-|*' --format '<markedversions:NAMESLOT>' Assuming cmd creates a list of the form category/name-version or =category/name-version, the above prints the corresponding list cate‐ gory/name or category/name:SLOT (depending on whether SLOTs need to be distinguished). You test command eix --non-masked --only-names does not create a list of the form "category/name-version" but only a list of the form "category/name". This is not a valid input for --pipe, and (besides some errors where eix tries to interpret the name as "name-version") you have in effect not marked any version (which is why the empty output is correct).

You want perhaps something like A='{!$prevslot=<slot>}%{NAMESLOT}{*prevslot=<slot>}{}' \ eix '-*' --format '{!*prevslot}<availableversions:A:A>' Maybe also this discussion helps: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-920952.html Anyway, the bug is valid, since eix should not spit an error if package names are passed by --pipe only because the name ends with something which looks similar to a version. This is now fixed in the eix git master on BerliOS (>=eix-0.25.6). Also new options --pipe-name and --pipe-version are introduced to avoid the ambiguity problem.

This does the trick: eix --stable --format '<availableversions:NAMESLOT>' |uniq ;)

If you want to see only the slots with a stable version put {stable} and {} at the beginning and end of A. I suggest to stop this discussion now since this does not belong into bugzille.
