A number of nvidia users using the GeForce 6 7 and 8 series of hardware are encountering a problem with missing consoles. Once a user logs into gdm the consoles disappear. This is happening with nvidia-drivers above 295*. Nvidia are aware of this regression, and the devs recommend to use 290* series until the issue is resolved. However the 290* series is not in the portage tree. The bug report on the nvnews site can be seen on the link below. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=173214&highlight=console&page=4 I have noticed a number of users on the amd64 arch experiencing a number of issues with this particular driver, but not sure if that applies to x86. I suppose I am requesting the return of this driver until nvidia come up with a fix. Apologies if I am out of my league posting this request in here. Reproducible: Always
You could just get it from our CVS[1] and put it in your local overlay. Or we could revamp this bug report to actually state the problem of the missing consoles and then get the real issue fixed. I have a GeForce 8800 GT graphics card. With the current nvidia-drivers-295*, I have no consoles. My screen powers off when I select any {ctrl+alt+f1-6 + 8-12}. Only tty7 works. After reading the nvnews forum, it seems users with newer cards are not affected by this regression. This regression is not unique to Gentoo. The nvidia guys are aware of the regression, but have not "nailed" it yet, but are on the case. In the meantime, they suggest using the 290* series of driver. It has been confirmed this resolves the problem. The reason I posted this report to bugzilla was to reinstate the 290* series of drivers to the portage tree. I don't want to play with local overlays, I just want to see the ebuild in portage, as I am sure others do. This is a problem for users with older graphics cards and I think it is fair we should have the 290* series return to portage, until a solution to the regression is found. Best regards. Thistled.
I have an update for you Jeroen. The ebuild you advised (290.10-r2) was too unstable on my system. I experienced lots of libnvida-tls segfaults. This would happen if I scroll using the scrollbar in nautilus, or accessing the preferences menu of opera browser and trying to change plug-in paths (just an example). But not on every occasion I should add. I have downgraded to nvidia-drivers-290.06 which appears to be more stable. I have only had one libnvidia-tls segfault today. :) I have even managed to try out webgl on opera browser for over 2 hours, and still no segfaults. In the meantime, I will stick with this 290.06 driver until the nvidia devs come up with a solution to the 295* regression. Perhaps there is no need for this bug-report now? As my initial request was for a reinstatement of a 290* series driver to the portage tree. But your suggestion was to just use the one on CVS. Apologies if I shouldn't have posted a bug and wasted your time.
Please re-test with the 302.x series. I no longer have the hardware that is affected by this.

Hello Doug I tested the 302.* series driver yesterday, and the problem persists. I switched to the latest nouveau and rebuilt what was necessary (kernel etc), and gnome-shell freaks out at 100% when scrolling down web pages. Especially pages with large jpegs. I noticed lots of VM trapped BAR/PFIFO READ PAGE NOT PRESENT problems in the kernel log, so I pulled back to the nvidia-290.* series. Hey I suppose I am waffling. Sorry. Still using 290.* series with occasional segfaults caused by libnvidia-tls. Being stuck with this driver prevents me from using the latest gentoo-sources. But at least I have my consoles. Hey-ho. Oh, and if there is anything you would like me to test out for you on this GeForce 8800GT just give me a nod.
