Description Michael Yagliyan 2012-06-03 02:54:16 UTC
emul-linux-x86-soundlibs (at least version 20120127) includes libsamplerate, but does not include the ALSA plugins for libsamplerate. The 64-bit versions of these plugins are currently in the media-plugins/alsa-plugins package. (I suppose alsa-plugins could have a 32-bit useflag to install these, but it's probably better to have them in an emul package.)

When using 32-bit applications (in my case, net-misc/icaclient, the "64-bit" version of which is apparently not fully 64-bit as it relies on a number of 32-bit libraries) with ALSA set to use one of the libsamplerate resamplers (my /etc/asound.conf contains: defaults.pcm.rate_converter "samplerate_best"), the wfica binary will crash with:

ALSA lib dlmisc.c:236:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib32/alsa-lib/libasound_module_rate_samplerate_best.so
ALSA lib pcm_rate.c:1398:(snd_pcm_rate_open) Cannot find rate converter
Segmentation fault

Sometimes it doesn't produce that output or crash, but it always fails to actually work. Commenting out that line in asound.conf (thus disabling the higher-quality resampler) beforehand fixes the issue.

Please provide some way to install 32-bit versions of the alsa-plugins libraries, whether that means adding it to emul-linux-x86-soundlibs, making a new emul package (emul-linux-x86-alsaplugins maybe?), or adding a 32bit useflag to alsa-plugins. Thanks!

Here is the output of emerge --info, FWIW:

Comment 1 Michael Yagliyan 2012-06-03 02:58:01 UTC
It's possible all of the alsa-plugins libraries are missing from emul-linux-x86-soundlibs, and not just the libsamplerate plugins. My specific issue is with the missing libsamplerate plugins, but any solution should probably include the other alsa-plugins libraries.
Comment 2 Michael Yagliyan 2012-06-03 03:13:29 UTC
Arch Linux seems to have solved this issue by having a "lib32-alsa-plugins" package. Reference: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=119265
