Rodica, I need your permission to publish these instructions under the cc-by-sa license (an open license we use for all our documentation).

Comment 11 Benny Chuang (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-03-28 06:29:11 UTC
Hi Rodica, would you like to add a little more text explaining what each step does? Doing so will help the readers understanding why such steps are required during the installation process.

Hi Rodica,
My xml conversion is almost done, I have never installed an oracle database before. As a part regarding blackdown jre

"Java 1.1.8 is available at one of the www.blackdown.org mirrors or from here:
http://mirrors.sunsite.dk/java-linux/JDK-1.1.8/i386/v3/jre118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2"

will it work if you can just emerge it from portage?

P.S if you plan to update further more, you can just submit them in txt file or notice me that the URL has been updated.;)
Comment 23 Rodica Balasa 2004-04-20 15:03:54 UTC
Thanks for the news and the sugestion, i did not think at that!

I just checked the portage tree, it seems sun jdk and jre versions start from java 1.3, unfortunattely the oracle instalation requires this antique version of java, which is pretty hard to find, on java.sun.com for java 1.1.8 only the solaris version is avaiable :(

FYI,
Oracle 9i and 10g are just a tad more recent than that old dying 8i workhorse.
Actually I am not going to try this 8i because of all its limitations on basic system packages but you might want to have a look at
9i:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=106527
http://ezine.daemonnews.org/200402/oracle.html
10g:
http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle10g.shtml

PS: strangely I have never used Oracle on Linux even though I have been using it since version 5 on Netware, AIX and HP-UX. I stopped at 8i.
I was going to try 10g soon(-ish). I'll try, but no promise. Not much time before coming W-E anyway.
Comment 27 Rodica Balasa 2004-04-20 16:32:28 UTC
Just a short time ago Oracle 10 was released, so 8i is quite old, currently all aplications are developped for 9i or newer, which are also easier to install. Actually I had to install Oracle9 on RedHat for a project and so I learned the basics. The problem was when I had to add some features to an old project, and the client had license for Oracle8, the installation was more difficult and there were less threads on the forums. So this guide is mainly for the few that need to work with the old version, probably for commercial reasons.
Comment 28 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-21 09:06:21 UTC
If commercial reasons are behind this doc (I mean if you think it's mostly interesting for people who stick with 8i for commercial reasons), I don't think this guide should be put up. Why? Because commercial reasons are mostly conservative and migrating an Oracle 8i to a Gentoo server isn't conservative. If an organisation wants to migrate an Oracle DB to a Gentoo server, it'll most likely also upgrade the Oracle DB.

I don't have any experience with Oracle 8i, 9i or 10 (I'm a SyBase adept :) but are the changes between 10 and 8i slim? If so, it would probably be beneficial to have the guide explain how to install 10 and then list the differences between 10 and older versions if users request this (so you don't have to do this before getting the doc finalised).
Comment 29 Rodica Balasa 2004-04-22 12:10:13 UTC
Well, I currently work on a software product that uses Oracle8. The client has oracle 8 installed on a windows server, but I do most of the development on gentoo (i like it more). Instlling oracle8 on any linux distribution except redhat is very tricky, and for gentoo i had very little information, it was hard and I just want to help other people that want to install oracle8 on gentoo aslo. The newer versions of oracle are much easier to install, the existing guides do just fine.
Comment 30 Benny Chuang (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-25 16:19:59 UTC
hmm Rod, maybe you should convert this to the newer version?
I agree with fellow GDP members. Please let me know if you're planning to work further more.
We appreciate your effort ;)
Comment 31 Rodica Balasa 2004-04-25 23:37:36 UTC
Hi there,

In the future I would like to complete the text (maybe as a different document), to include Oracle10 installation guide, but in the short term (next two-three months) I am not able, as I need a different gentoo server, some new hardware and a few free days to try the install. I will make the review to the current text this comming days.

Comment 32 Benny Chuang (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-25 23:49:25 UTC
I will mark this as LATER, feel free to reopen this once you're ready :)

reviewed html version, with record changes option from openoffice

i added some text at running the installer part about setting the java paths.
Someone trying to install oracle8 found the web document and he had some
problems with java paths, so I added that to the document.

Some small stuff:the code listings start with "#" if the current user is root
and with "$" if it is oracle user

I also modified the chapters structure.
