Description autobear 2004-02-16 18:31:29 UTC
I think it is the gnome's problem , When I am in twm or blackbox, everything went well!

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.start gnome
2.start xmms or emacs
3.

Actual Results:
gnome freeze and mouse can't move for about 20 seconds, after that everything
returns OK

Expected Results:
I think it is font problem, because when I am about to change font in xmms
configuration panel
the same result happens.

preempt activated in kernel ?
hdparm tuning activated ?
Comment 2 autobear 2004-02-20 02:30:22 UTC
both activated!
I am very sure it is caused by font problem !
Comment 3 Mamoru KOMACHI (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-06 03:13:24 UTC
Sorry for the delay. Does the problem still persist?
Could you provide the output of `equery list "*fonts*"`?
(Did you install efont-unicode? It might slow down your
machine after you installed it creating font cache, but
this occurs only once.)
Comment 4 youri 2005-03-19 09:05:45 UTC
I believe this is related to an issue i am having with xmms and fonts, when i select a font in xmms settings that has unicode support xmms hangs, strace gives me this:

select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [3])
read(3, "\1\32/\'\0\0\0\0\0\0\377\277\4\0\0\0`\255y\t)\0\0\0\1\0"..., 32) = 32
writev(3, [{"1\0\21\0\1\0009\0", 8}, {"-adobe-utopia-regular-r-normal-*"..., 57}, {"\0\0\0", 3}], 3) = 68
read(3, 0xbfffe640, 32) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [3])
read(3, "\1\0320\'\20\0\0\0\1\0\377\277\4\0\0\0 P\222\0109\0\0\0"..., 32) = 32
readv(3, [{"<-adobe-utopia-regular-r-normal-"..., 64}, {"", 0}], 2) = 64
writev(3, [{"2\0\21\0\1\0;\0", 8}, {"-adobe-utopia-regular-r-normal--"..., 59}, {"\0", 1}], 3) = 68
read(3, 0xbfffe820, 32) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, NULL) = 1 (in [3])

for a whole lot of fonts

I do not have a font server running or anything! This only happens if i run xmms with setting LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8, also the unicode fonts do not appear right
Comment 5 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2006-11-20 07:38:29 UTC
Does this problem still exist?
xmms is away soon
Comment 6 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-20 16:05:58 UTC
xmms gone; user response needed here anyway.
