*git-1.7.3.4-r1 (19 Dec 2010)
this is the stable version on my system, which is now nearly 1.5y old

Maybe you can stabilize *git-1.7.8.6 (26 Apr 2012)?
30 days have passed and it seems to work fine on my machines (1 server with a gitolite setup, 2 clients, all amd64)

Agreed; I would like to see a new version of git brought to stable.

There are a number of open bugs for various versions but none appear to be blockers. Robin is abit busy to look after bugs so I'm going to call for stabilization myself.
