Description Vince C. 2012-05-30 20:57:48 UTC
It was considered a bug by libnotify maintainers to allow popups over full-screen windows and I admit that it might mostly be true. However there are circumstances where popups *should* be displayed even on top of fullscreen windows (e.g. battery critically low, critical events, the user's own will, whatever).

Reproducible: Always

Hi.

I'm just kindly asking to make this a configurable option in Gentoo for I'm not knowledgeable enough to make the change myself. As far as I have seen there is one user who asked almost the same feature on Launchpad. Is it possible?

Wrong tracking system for direct feature requests in the programs itself. Try these instead:

For libnotify and notification-daemon:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/

For notify-osd:

http://launchpad.net/notify-osd

For xfce4-notifyd:

http://bugzilla.xfce.org/

Yes, Samuli, I know this is not the right place. Fact is the maintainers of libnotify have clearly stated (if I have understood it correctly) they wouldn't change how libnotify works. I admin asking Gentoo (or any other distribution maintainers) is counter-productive and definitely not the way to go but then I (as well as other users) need a hint...

Any suggestion?

Well if upstream says 'no' then there is not much we can do. We don't patch upstream code like that in order to add new features. We try to stay as close to upstream as possible.

That doesn't sound too reassuring then. What is left then? Fork libnotify?

Probably patch libnotify yourself in your local overlay :-/

Yes, I guess that's the least demanding task of both. Would probably mean months of annoyance till I come up with a solution.

Well, in the end nothing's impossible to a coder, eh? ;) I'll try digging the dirt and see what I can do.

While I'm no n00b in C/C++, I am totally ignorant in all the GTK/GTK++ matters, best practices and the likes. Any hint/advice/documentation I need to follow?

Better wait for other team members as I am neither a coder :(

Not a problem as I expect I'll need some time, you see ;) .
