Same issue here; on Gentoo Hardened while trying to emerge virtualbox

This is most likely fixed by the recent changes in autotools-utils.eclass, "emerge --sync" then try again

After emerge --sync to day it's ok.

As in comment 5, emerge --sync today did the trick.
