Description Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-18 20:17:24 UTC
On 9gag.com, after a little bit of scrolling (sometimes more, sometimes less), midori 0.4.3 (reproduced with epiphany 2.30.6) goes to 100 % CPU and doesn't seem to stop (killed the process every time). This is 100 % reproducible.

Using sysprof, I determined that it spent all that time in /usr/lib64/libwebkitgtk-3.0.so.0.11.2. Someone else was able to reproduce with a similar setup, someone with 1.8.1 wasn't.

So this may be a (serious, at least one site is completely unusable; haven't tried to find others) bug which is already fixed upstream.

I wasn't able to test with 1.8.1 because upgrading required a glibc-upgrade, which I wasn't prepared to do. Whenever I get round to doing it, I will check if I can reproduce or if the bug goes away.

I haven't tried leaving out the scrolling, or scrolling with the keyboard.
My uninformed guess is that it's somehow related to the ads that are displayed along the sides.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. With midori 0.4.3 or epiphany 2.30.6, go to 9gag.com
2. scroll down a bit (sometimes it needs some scrolling around, but it never takes more than 30 seconds)

Actual Results:
program hangs, 100 % CPU

Expected Results:
continue to function as a browser.

Comment 2 Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-18 20:24:55 UTC
I searched the release notes and the bug database of the webkit-gtk project to find any clues as to a fixed bug that sounds like this one, but didn't find anything.
Comment 3 Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-18 20:27:51 UTC
the "possible deadlock" is mere speculation on my part, perhaps I'm just reading the sysprof output wrong. If necessary, I can reproduce and provide a screenshot.
Comment 4 Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-20 17:33:11 UTC
1. Presumably it does not merely hang on 9gag, but on other sites that use whatever is causing this issue.
2. The severity guidelines state "crashes or hangs" or words to that effect; so I'm not sure why this gets bumped down 2 levels to 'normal'.
Comment 5 Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-20 17:36:42 UTC
(bumped severity without any reasoning, no less)
Comment 6 Nicolai Czempin 2012-05-20 17:54:53 UTC
I just got a crash with Epiphany when going from alexa.com to about.com. May be related; haven't been able to reproduce in 3 attempts.

Recheck with webkit-gtk-1.8.1*
