Description Michał Górny archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2012-05-17 06:59:12 UTC
With SYMLINK_LIB=yes, baselayout fails saying /lib must be symlink to /lib64. With SYMLINK_LIB=no, it fails saying I have to merge /lib32 into /lib. What's the trick to install it when /lib, /lib32 & /lib64 are separate directories? Or do I have to invent a new profile, and hack multilib.eclass, and possibly a few other places where we set up ABI stuff randomly.
Comment 1 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2012-05-17 14:42:51 UTC
According to the fhs [1], placement of libraries is architecture
specific. It looks to me like the only architecture that should have
lib32 is ia64.

@mgorny:
I don't really claim to know much about multilib, but with my reading of
the fhs, lib32 should not exist on amd64 and that should be merged into
lib.

@vapier:
Can you please fill me in on this? Why do we have the option to symlink
lib to lib64?

Ok, baselayout does get the check wrong. It's got hardcoded 'lib' in multilib_layout in a few places, where it should be looking for the names based on the LIBDIR_$ABI variables. This will probably break under x32 as well.
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2012-05-17 17:20:20 UTC
forget about FHS ... there's no need to incorporate that unrelated rabbit hole

for the original summary, your setup makes no sense. on an amd64 system, if you have /lib32 when SYMLINK_LIB=no, that's an error and baselayout should fail on you. if you have /lib as a dir when SYMLINK_LIB=yes, then that's an error and baselayout should fail on you.

it is completely pointless to support /lib and /lib32 as dirs on amd64 regardless of SYMLINK_LIB value.

baselayout hardcoding 'lib' isn't a bug. the whole point of SYMLINK_LIB is that we do screw around with that. if you have a scenario where this code fails, show it to me and i'll review it.
