Description Malte Starostik 2012-05-11 00:55:14 UTC
This change to media-tv/mythtv and related cleanups on the plugins dropped the last "stable" version of mythtv from the tree.

07 Mar 2012; Doug Goldstein <cardoe@gentoo.org> -mythtv-0.23.1_p27077.ebuild:
 	Remove old version

Now that version wasn't perfect, but did quite a good job. Now there's only an ~arch 0.24.1_p20110524 version. I'm all in favour of upgrading, actually rather some 0.25 instead of 0.24, BUT a stable keyword would certainly provide some more confidence in this step.

Apart from threatening the family peace, the bad consequence is that this totally breaks updating qt-* and thus updating @world

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. have media-tv/mythtv-0.23.1_p27077 installed
2. emerge @world

Actual Results:
Can't resolve these blockers as the qt-*-4.7.4 packages are squatted by mythtv:

...
Conflict: 30 blocks (8 unsatisfied)
...
x11-libs/qt-webkit:4

  (x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.7.4::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.4:4[dbus] required by (media-tv/mythtv-0.23.1_p27077::gentoo, installed)

  (x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.8.1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    ~x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.8.1[aqua=,c++0x=,debug=,qpa=] required by (x11-libs/qt-declarative-4.8.1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (and 1 more with the same problem)

Expected Results:
Either the old mythtv version should have stayed or a new one stabilised and thus the update succeeded.

Keywords (the KEYWORDS variable) should reflect the state of the ebuild, what it installs and how the software runs. You should probably go ahead and unmask 0.24.* if you were fine with running 0.23.* as well. Follow bug #411547 if you're interested in getting 0.25.* into the tree.

(In reply to comment #1)

Point is that there was a stable as in KEYWORDed amd64 0.23 version in the tree, which has been pruned off before there is a newer version with that keyword available. And that makes the installed old but keyworded version break dependency calculation. So sure thing I'll have a look at 0.24 or rather directly at 0.25. But the subject of this bug is the messup caused for anyone with 0.23 installed by the (from $user's perspective) premature removal of those ebuilds. Thanks for you work, *really*. But why is asking to not break/unbreak the tree invalid?
Comment 3 Richard Freeman gentoo-dev 2012-05-12 16:14:30 UTC
I think part of the issue is that there aren't many of us caring for mythtv in Gentoo in general, and we all sort-of have different goals.

Personally I'd have left 0.23 stable, then stabilized 0.24.1 and a few of the plugins. I suspect others want something a bit more bleeding edge, and so on. Unless proxy maintainers step up I doubt I'll ever support more than a few plugins.

I've been having a bit of trouble getting my frontend switched over to Gentoo (issues with vdapu - possibly X11-related) which has kept me from moving to 0.25 because I REALLY don't want to have to upgrade my non-Gentoo front-end again.

For now I think mythtv in portage basically is what it is. It seems like we're all getting along reasonably well as-is - if others want to become more active and push things along further I'll probably just get out of their way and maintain yet another overlay that lags well-behind the others.

For me mythtv is more about something for the family to watch on TV and less about cutting edge technology, so stability matters far more than being current. Plus, since I'm using more than one distro version coordination is a real pain right now. If I can get Gentoo running on my Zotac ION without artifacts I might be able to do more to keep up...
Comment 4 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-05-13 02:57:39 UTC
There is no such thing as a stable package when it doesn't compile. As Rich said, we don't really have the development man power / interest in MythTV in Gentoo. We need people to step up as devs and get it in a good state.
