do you have automake installed ?
Yes automake is installed. As you can see in the emerge --info: sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.69 sys-devel/automake: 1.10.3, 1.11.5
And you have file /usr/share/aclocal-1.11/init.m4? Can you `emerge -C autoconf automake` and let them reinstall for a test?
Yes, the file /usr/share/aclocal-1.11/init.m4 is there. I have recompiled both packages, but without deinstalling. Are you sure, that 'emerge -C autoconf automake' will the system no render unuseable, as the packages itself look for the autotools? The problem is not resolved with this.
you can remove any autotool package and easily re-install them. they aren't part of @system anymore.

I merged zlib without this and it worked. Now I need to look after vlc, as this needs minizip.

I've updated to gcc 4.7 and installed automake 1.12. Now the errormessage reads: * ERROR: sys-libs/zlib-1.2.7 failed (unpack phase): * Cannot find the latest automake! Tried 1.11.1:1.11 Is there any chance to get this solved?
