1. @sping: I haven't hunted down the bug, but your patch, that hit upstream (http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/commit/configure.ac?h=gimp-2-8&id=53d82447136a6a5b8bc87f2d49dde936e8a65ff9) was committed with an obvious typo, that causes 'configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-bzip2'

2. unless I'm missing something, *all* of gimp's la files have no use at all and should simply be removed by the ebuild
