When Midnight Commander aka mc is fired up, it creates a directory named tilde "~" in the CWD. Obviously tilde expansion is not applied somewhere, when it should be - maybe for a hard coded path? This did not happen in the past. Update to 4.8.1 was compiled in January and mc was used in the meantime. Hence, this is probably related to some other update, maybe XDG? I've got a strong conjecture, that XDG is the evil guy here. # echo $XDG_CACHE_HOME ~/.cache # echo $XDG_CONFIG_HOME ~/.config When I export both variables to the full path, it works as expected.
Ok. Somehow there were the following lines in /etc/env.d/90xsession XDG_CONFIG_HOME=~/.config XDG_CACHE_HOME=~/.cache Removed it. And in /etc/profile.env export XDG_CACHE_HOME='~/.cache' export XDG_CONFIG_HOME='~/.config' Removed it, too. Everything is working again now. Maybe XDG config needs some fixup here? IIRC I had problems with my window manager "awesome" as well after xdg update.
