Description Joe Khoobyar 2004-02-11 22:08:48 UTC
In all of the openoffice-ximian components, the menu and dialog fonts are impossible to read. They are so small that I geuss the font point size to be around 1 pt. That's right. ONE. The entire menu bar fits into a span of 32 pixels or so, maybe less.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
emerge openoffice-ximian

Actual Results:
In all of the openoffice-ximian components, the menu and dialog fonts are
impossible to read. They are so small that I geuss the font point size to be
around 1 pt. That's right. ONE. The entire menu bar fits into a span of 32
pixels or so, maybe less.

Could this possible be related to a problem with the new xfree release?
Probably not, but this is definitely VERY strange. To top it off, I waited all
day for this thing to build. :(

Expected Results:
Normal fonts.

Probably the font selected as gui font is wrong. You can set the UI font by defining a font replacement for "Andale Sans UI"
Comment 2 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-02-12 01:09:41 UTC
Actually openoffice-ximian is getting its font settings from the gnome settings, so no reason to apply the font replacement. Do you use gnome? And what did you set your settings there? Also could you check in the Openoffice-prefs under Accessibility > Use system font for user interface if this is set and if selecting or deselcting this helps anything?

Thanks for the suggestions. However, since the font is completely unreadable, these menus are unnavigable. Additionally (which I probably should've mentioned) since dialog metrics are most commonly based on character metrics, the dialogs are unusable and unreadable as well. Configuration of Ximian OpenOffice from inside the application is thus impossible.

Also, I use KDE as my desktop. The only gnome stuff that I have are to satisfy package dependencies. Perhaps this is the source of the problem? Is there perhaps a package "missing" or some configuration "missing" that should've been part of the ebuild for people that don't use Gnome?

Hmmm....

I ran into this problem also with OO 1.1.0-r3 ... I did some digging and it seems to have something to do with Oopen Office using TrueType fonts for the UI. The recommended solution was to remove the TrueType fonts from my X font server. However, that was undesireable as I need them, not to mention it seemed to destablize KDE. Anyway, I removed the following entries from /etc/X11/fs/config

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF

And restarted "xfs". Then, OO's UI was fine. Then, to fix the UI font, go to "Tools --> Options". Under "openoffice.org", go to the Accessibility sub-menu and select the "Use system font for user interface" checkbox. Et voila, it works just fine.

Finally, re-add the removed lines from your XFS config and restart XFS again. And then, for good measure, restart X. Worked for me.

Hey, this works just great in the latest ebuild: openoffice-ximiam-1.1.50. So I'm happy to say that I'm no longer having this problem.

This should be marked FIXED.
