The english handbook misses a grub.conf example in case the user wants to boot a genkernel. In detail it misses the listing that explains how to use the real_root kernel parameter. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=10 The german handbook has that exmaple. (Listing 2.4). This is even more confusing as the text in the english book mentions "real_root" later on without any explanation. The same is true for the lilo configuration sections. But here it's listing 3.3 that is different in the english and german version. This came up in IRC when someone had problems to get a genkernel to boot properly. I can't say much much as I never used genkernel before but it seems after using real_root the boot problem was gone. Reproducible: Always
Awww, of course I forgot something. The same is true for the X86 handbook. Didn't check any other versions.
Hmm, I'm using genkernel here and don't need to provide a real_root anymore (with initramfs). Shame on me for expecting this to work always ;-) Reverting the change...
