The new USE="gdm new-login" logic needs you to keyword x11-misc/lightdm. Or you can package.use.mask both flags like HPPA has done: arch/hppa/package.use.mask:x11-misc/xscreensaver gdm new-login I'm CCing hppa@ too if they want to revise this mask. It was added when the only option of new-login was still gdm to avoid gnome, but now that lightdm is available and doesn't require gnome specific packages, they might want to change to: arch/hppa/package.use.mask:x11-misc/xscreensaver gdm and keyword lightdm (btw, xfce fans can also keyword xfce-extra/xfswitch-plugin which is related to this bug, it's an userswitching applet that can now also use lightdm)
I think we'll keep it as is until a user requests either of the USE flags be unmasked.
