got grep installed by emerge --oneshot --nodeps dev-libs/libiconv and emerge --oneshot --nodeps virtual/libiconv; but it didn't install automake
autoconf probably comes from autoconf-wrapper. Any idea why your portage says: shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent ?
I can get past this point when bootstrapping, so I suspect your problem is related to your cwd problem
