Description Richard Yao (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-04-12 07:24:50 UTC
The current dependency graph of genkernel-9999 depends on !<sys-apps/openrc-0.9.9, which poses a problem for ZFS documentation. Stabilizing sys-apps/openrc-0.9.9.3 would solve that problem.

I have been testing sys-apps/openrc-0.9.9.3 on amd64 for a few weeks and it works without a problem. Patrick Lauer said filing a stable request would be okay.

Please stabilize sys-apps/openrc-0.9.9.3 on both amd64 and x86.

No, please do not stabilize this version.
Bug #409743, which was fixed in git, will cause issues for users.

What is invalid here? The stabilize request? The comment?

  Title udev-181 unmasking
  Author William Hubbs <williamh@gentoo.org>

  Revision 1

udev-181 is being unmasked on 2012-03-19.

This news item is to inform you that once you upgrade to a version of
udev >=181, if you have /usr on a separate partition, you must boot your
system with an initramfs which pre-mounts /usr.

An initramfs which does this is created by
>=sys-kernel/genkernel-3.4.25.1 or
>=sys-kernel/dracut-017-r1. If you do not want to use these tools, be
sure any initramfs you create pre-mounts /usr.

Also, if you are using OpenRC, you must upgrade to >= openrc-0.9.9.

For more information on why this has been done, see the following URL:
http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/separate-usr-is-broken
-----------------
But openrc-0.9.9.3 is marked ~amd64. Is it stable for amd64? Buy the way the link says nothing about why openrc has to be upgraded.

please read the previous comment
Comment 4 Dan Beavers 2012-05-09 03:28:15 UTC
Of course I did read the previous comment and that is why I am confused and asking for clarification.

My problem comes from this:
"Also, if you are using OpenRC, you must upgrade to >= openrc-0.9.9."

I am using OpenRC and cannot upgrade to >= openrc-0.9.9 due to openrc-0.9.9.3 being marked ~amd64.

Is there a valid bug or stable request for >= openrc-0.9.9?

William had a chat with me on IRC regarding this a few days after I filed it. OpenRC 0.9.9.3 cannot be stabilized because of a bug where building OpenRC depends on OpenRC already being installed. That would cause problems for people who have last upgraded their systems before OpenRC was stabilized.

With that said, OpenRC 0.10 will be out soon and it should be able to enter the stable tree assuming no major issues are discovered within 30 days. Also, the Gentoo Council decided to maintain support for booting without an initramfs, so the news article can be ignored.
