Description Mark 2012-04-06 13:39:54 UTC
I recently emerged dev-python/bsddb3 and then re-emerged my system python with an unset berkdb flag (to avoid the post install deprecated warnings and prepare for the future). In an attempt to resolve an issue with etc-proposals (a seperate bug report) I ran python-updater (even though there was no python version change). python-updater threw a bunch of lines about corrupt ELF symbols:

 # python-updater
 * Starting Python Updater...
 * Main active version of Python: 2.7
 * Active version of Python 2:       2.7
 * Active version of Python 3:       3.2
 * Globally supported Python ABIs in installed repositories:
 *   gentoo:                         2.4 2.5 2.6 2.7 3.1 3.2 2.5-jython 2.7-pypy-1.7 2.7-pypy-1.8
 *   x-portage:                      2.4 2.5 2.6 2.7 3.1 3.2 2.5-jython 2.7-pypy-1.7 2.7-pypy-1.8

scanelf: scanelf_file_sym(): /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/libsaproc.debuginfo: corrupt ELF symbols
scanelf: scanelf_file_sym(): /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/libsaproc.debuginfo: corrupt ELF symbols
scanelf: scanelf_file_sym(): /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/libsapr ................................
........... (more of the same).......................
..........................   /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.debuginfo: corrupt ELF symbols
scanelf: scanelf_file_sym(): /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.debuginfo: corrupt ELF symbols
scanelf: scanelf_file_sym(): /usr/lib64/icedtea7/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.debuginfo: corrupt ELF symbols - aborting

I then rebuilt icedtea7, re-ran python-updater and none of the ELF stuff went away. I also rebuilt pax-utils which made no diffrerence. Please note that a nearly identical gentoo box (without the unset python berkdb flag) produces the same warnings if I run python-updater. I note that things on both boxes run OK in most other respects. I am not sure if the problem is related to icedtea, python-updater, pax-utils, something in my system setup, something else, or not really a problem at all.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run python-updater
2.
3.
Actual Results:
get scanelf warnings as above

Expected Results:
No corrupt ELF symbols
Comment 1 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2012-04-16 04:09:52 UTC
not sure if there is a way to have scanelf detect & ignore split-debug files. they are generally "corrupt" because they only contain the debug stuff and while the headers refer to the right places [in the original ELF], in the split-debug file, the references point nowhere.
Comment 2 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2012-04-29 06:21:52 UTC
the next release should skip over debuginfo files gracefully

Comment 3 Ralph Sennhauser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-04-29 07:01:13 UTC
Future releases of icedtea should no longer strip themselves. Leaving stripping / splitting to the PM should fix this for us as well.
