I have a pulseaudio only system with alsa backends. No alsa-utils, no alsamixer, no /etc/init.d/alsasound. When entering kde session, kmix does not have to restore mixer levels, pulseaudio does it himself. With default settings in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, it does not. with flat-volumes = no in this file, all work fine. perhaps you (or we) can correct the documentation on how to fix pulseaudio settings. (sorry for my bas english)
Ah, that could be the resolution for Bug 401283. I'll investigate that issue shortly ... If setting flat-volumes=no really helps, I'd propose to adjust the pulseaudio defaults accordingly. I don't see the point in keeping this strange option ...
