Could you add an informational message after merging chef-solr telling to run chef-solr-installer at first install? Upstream documentation is very sparse about this point and I spend some time before I realise it was necessary to initialize chef-solr.

Perhaps it could be run it from chef-solr ebuild post_install phase?
