I found that bug 388705 decided to ignore the problem, even though the fix is simple: have <dev-libs/quazip-0.4.3 depend on <sys-libs/zlib-1.2.6. Obviously, the workaround is to just keyword the newer quazip. Reproducible: Always

I should amend the above to say that <dev-libs/quazip-0.4.3 should depend on <sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5.1. The only official versions were 1.2.5 and 1.2.6, so those are the only ones I examined. Since I opened this bug, I updated my version of quazip so smplayer2 would build. To downgrade it, I'd need to downgrade zlib and virtuoso-server, and I'm not sure if that's it. Then downgrade quazip and bring zlib and virtuoso-server back to their current versions. ... I read the output of build.log. That was THE error. I shouldn't think smplayer is broken because of this.
Also, it appears you are mixing the stable and unstable branch here. This is generally unsupported, and the bug within the unstable branch has already been fixed in unstable quazip.
Invalid, huh? Strange... my experience has been that I should be able to run an unstable version of something. If I unmask that package, emerge will tell me what else I need to unmask to make it build.
