If I run 'play spacemusic.au' from the console before starting a displaymanager, it fails with: root@wildcat:/root(3)# play /usr/share/sounds/spacemusic.au xcb_connection_has_error() returned true play FAIL formats: can't open output file default': can not open audio device: Connection refused 'aplay /usr/share/sounds/spacemusic.au' has no problems. After starting gnome also 'play /usr/share/sounds/spacemusic.au' works. Looks like you have sox compiled with pulseaudio support which it defaults to using before alsa or ao. Therefore, when you try to play something pulseaudio throws that xcb error so this looks like a pulseaudio problem of some type. It works once the desktop is up because at that point pulseaudio is initialized correctly and running. You can test this by overriding the default sox driver like this on the console: export AUDIODRIVER=alsa play spacemusic.au
