Like in topic - of course it is not a must, because most i3 users probably have some experience in configuring .xinitrc. 
But since x11-misc/slim supports session dir out-of-the-box now, it will be nice if i3 will put its own session file in /etc/X11/Sessions.

I think it is closer to a bug than to an enhancement, but fell free to recategorize if you want.
