Description ferret 2004-02-06 06:26:16 UTC
Try visiting a topic containing at least one emoticon in lynx/elinks/links2 using
the "display alt text in place of image" modes where applicable. Here's a random
example:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=132399

Here's an excerpt:

--------------------------------
...I am lost without
Gkrellm. Crying or Very sad

Thanks

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
--------------------------------

This isn't too bad, but it's a little odd, and the text has the same colour and
weight of the surrounding text. It looks as if this forum user has literally
typed "Crying or Very sad".

Here's another example which is even more confusing:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=132967

--------------------------------
I didn't have this problem before I
switched to Gentoo (used to use RedHat Rolling Eyes )
--------------------------------

I suggest that the alt texts are, where possible, replaced with ascii
representations. For example, the alt text "Crying, or Very sad" could be changed
to ":("

If nothing is going to be done about this "bug", I will close it soon.

Perhaps this bug report should be directed to phpBB team <http://www.phpbb.com/bugs/ > and fixed also there upstream. I would do it myself, but I don't have time to check whether this bug is caused by wrong customisation done gentoo or if it exists in the main source itself, by a quick check I do see same problem duplicated at phpbb's own community forum. Just my 0.02 euros.

This isn't a bug at all. These alt texts are _entirely customisable_ already. Please see "Smiley Emoticon": http://www.phpbb.com/support/guide/#section3_2_4

So in other words, it's at least a bug fixable on gentoo forums (which I still
think it should be), and at most a bug report should be filed at phpbb to
change the default texts to something less confusing for people who have images
turned off or otherwise can't see them.

Not that I think they will pay any attention to it Smile Smile

There was a bug in phpBB which made the solution to this a bit more complicated than a simple config change. It should be fixed now.
