Description Tommy Li 2004-02-05 19:23:53 UTC
Tahoma is a damn good font, and should be installed by default.

Most of us here have or had at least one Windows license. Therefore, I propose leaving it to be installed by default, and let it be disabled through a use flag: "-tahoma" or something.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

You cannot assume people have a Windows license, as this is inherently poor logic for people using an operating system other than Windows.

The defaults need to be sane for people without assuming ownership of anything other than the running system.

On a side note, is that font provided by anything in portage? I didn't spot it after a quick `grep -ir tahoma /usr/share/fonts/ /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/`.

Then I suppose the optimal would be to give an easy way to install tahoma, either through a USE flag, or a seperate package.

From http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/:

"020827 A friendly soul over at Microsoft informed me that the Tahoma font was never a part of the 'core fonts for the web' initiative and has unclear licensing, so I've removed it"

"So, if you have a windows license and you accept the other restrictions in the IE EULA, you are are free to change the define HAS_WINDOWS_LICENSE to 'yes', and the tahoma font will be included also"

I might look into adding this to media-fonts/corefonts.

OK, talked this over with foser. Even a USE flag is too easy for something that requires people to buy a Windows license, and the hassle required for an internal variable compared to the number of people who would see it isn't worth it.

added tahoma

How about this?
http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/ says:
Uses tahoma from word 97 viewer instead of the ie6 update so no windows license is needed.
It's not MSttfEULA license, but may be we can add new ebuild or smth...
