I'm not using mythtv by myself, but I just had a chat with another user on #gentoo.de who said mythtv would crash when he tries to use visualization in the program with error "No SDL surface" - I told him to emerge libsdl and actually this fixed the problem.
I think this means mythtv should have libsdl as RDEPEND

It would help to see the crash log and any of the options that were used to build it and emerge --info.
