Description Kenny Smith [standsolid] 2004-02-05 01:49:52 UTC
it would be slick if we could include this patch (perhaps optionally?)

http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/multiuser/XFree86-4.3.0-unified.patch

it allows two XFree servers to run at once (with seperate kebords, etc).

As far as I know, that shouldn't require a patch if set up properly. But I'll check it out.

spyderous: my first impression was that this shouldnt need a patch...

But now that I think about it the comments on http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/multiuser/ do seem more correct.

That being said im going to try and implement this system under 4.3.99.902 without the patch and see what happens, im still thinking a user can simply invoke a second server using a different layout etc...

Well, the way I want to set it up is to actually have a "background" X11 server running on my TV. X will always change VTs, and therefore, lose my other X desktop. This patch (supposedly) lets you have two displayed at once.

I was never successful at patching gentoo's 4.3.0-r3 with this patch.

IF anyone finds out if you don't need this patch, could you post here how one could do it? (or perhaps in the forums. i couldn't find anything there tho) -- i'll happily whip up a quick HOWTO if I can get the proper information.

You cant do this on a standard X install.

The limitation comes down to not being able to have two active VT's running simultaneously. This method of solving this though is not something that is suitable for the xfree package in gentoo, it requires to many external configurations to be tweaked -- and after all is (really) a bad way to implement this sort of ability.

I'll leave this on my TODO list for now, as I actually like the idea of what this achieves, but this method is something you'll have to patch in yourself.
